I know, I know – we try to keep the watch stuff over at WWR, but when things start packing in bluetooth radios (to connect to your smartphone) and feature some clever materials (and it’s shiny!), well, I’m going to land them over here. One such recent release that hits those very arbitrary standards is the G-Shock MTGB2000XMG1.
Now, the first thing that hits you about the G-Shock MTGB2000XMG1 is all the color. The bezel – which calls to mind Fordite – is made up of resin, carbon fiber, and glass fiber. In other words, not just color, but it’s also light and tough. Those colors then continue on with the ion plating on the elements of the dial, as well as the golden strap attachments.
Material-wise, the G-Shock MTGB2000XMG1 doesn’t just stop at the bezel. The case itself is a monocoque construction made of carbon-infused resin (again, light and tough), all topped with a sapphire crystal. All of this protects the smarts of the watch, which allows it to be charged up via light (even indoors lights). Once fully charged (outdoors will be best) it’ll run for up to 29 months. If for some reason it’s tucked away in a drawer for a few months, it’ll be in a low power mode.
Pull the G-Shock MTGB2000XMG1 out of that drawer, sync it up with your G-Shock app on your phone, and it’ll be right on time (and date). Then again, given the quartz cycling in there, it probably isn’t going to be that far off, it at all. Still, in my experience (I’ve got an older solar analog G-Shock) the app is a boon for helping you get the watch configured, and remembering how to use the various functions built into the watch itself (you know, alarms, timers, stop watch, and the like).
Now, all of this comes in at a price you might not expect for a G-Shock: $1,150. Even at that price, this model is sold out. There is one other variant available for a few hundred bucks less, though it’s not as wild of a color scheme. Still, check out the eye-catcher over at gshock.com
