The Turing Tumble – a marble-powered computer game

Yes, that’s right – a marble-powered computer game. But not in the sense that you’re thinking, whatsoever. At first glance, the Turing Tumble looks like one of those marble maze things that kids love to play with. Ok, I really like playing around with them too, I’ll admit it. But what if kids could learn the logic concepts behind computing? That’s what the Turing Tumble is setting out to do.

Make no mistake – while we here at KN dig tech and gadgets, there’s something about the tactile pleasure (and table talk) of a good ol’ tabletop game. Of course, with the technology known as crowdfunding, we can find out there are a lot more options out there. One of the latest to ping my radar screen is Moonrakers.

Dice by PCalc will never leave you without a saving throw

If you’re a dedicated role-player you’ll know the satisfaction of holding a wonderful little bag of dice. The cold density of a D20, the oddness of a 4-sided, the perfection of a six-sided die – all of those are important to the gaming process.

But what if you want to automate the process? There’s the new Dice app for iOs and the Apple Watch that replaces that Crown Royal sack with something that looks like what Lobot would use on Cloud City.

The app, available for $1.99, lets you choose dice and then roll them individually or all at once. Need dice on your wrist? You can access the app on your Apple Watch and get a quick saving throw on the fly. While nothing beats the feel of four little geometric pieces of luck in your hand, this is the next best thing.

Bring out your inner DM with Escape the Dark Castle

Easy-to-play RPG games like Gloomhaven have recently brought dungeon crawling out of the basement and onto the living room table. The idea that you can play a campaign without spending hours or days and eating twelve bags of Cheetos is a delightful thought for parents/former Dungeon Masters like myself. That’s where Escape the Dark Castle comes in.
