A big juice box for adventures – the Goal Zero Yeti 1000X

Yesterday, we told you about a portable wind turbine that can be used while you’re out camping, or even at home for emergencies. What if you want an even bigger battery, something to last you for a full week while out in the wilds, or even for an extended power outage? This is something I’ve been more interested in since our derecho event last summer, and the Goal Zero Yeti 1000X looks like it could cover a lot of bases.

When it comes to our portable batteries, we’re used to dealing with things in mAh, and that’s generally how our phone batteries are rated too. So, we know, oh, I can get about 2 charges out of this portable brick before I need to plug it in again. The Goal Zero Yeti 1000? It’s on a different level, man. It’s got a 983 Wh battery inside – which, for comparison, means you could charge your phone up to 82 times. You can see a full list down at the end of this article of the types of things it can power up, and how many times.

The Goal Zero Yeti 1000 also has a ton of outputs. Not just the USB-A or USB-C that we’re used to, but also a USB-C PD (for running your laptop), 12V car adapter (aka cigarette lighter style), two 120V AC outlets (ie, your normal wall plug), and a mess of others (again, all listed below). So, what does this mean you can do while you’re out adventuring – or even just temporarily off-grid due to a power outage? This video explains it pretty well:

If that wasn’t enough, the Goal Zero Yeti 1000 can also be powered up via solar panels (which Goal Zero sells as well), which is one heck of a way to keep things going off-grid if you ask me. The base kit (which comes with a 120W wall charger) will run you $1,299.95, while adding a 100W solar panel into the mix bumps the price up the $1,549.95. Yeah, it’s a bit steeper than your normal battery packs, but this one can do so much more. And hey, it’s cheaper than a whole-house generator (and a a lot more portable, and quieter). And worth noting, they also make smaller (and larger) power stations at a variety of price points. Check out all the details, and the various accessories for it, over at goalzero.com
